our village

I must be one of the most fortunate people on earth! I white water river raft for a living, and me and the family live in one of the most beautiful little towns in South Africa, Clarens.

Surrounded by the Rooiberge and situated at the foot of Mount Horeb, Clarens is famous for its multi-coloured sandstone formations, a unique geological feature of the area. To the south-east of Clarens you’ll find the mighty Maluti Mountains.  Enter the village and you will see many beautiful homes, old and new  built with this sandstone.

This tree-filled town offers a wonderfull display of colourful blossoms in spring time and in autumn the magnificent autum shades of the Lombardy poplars is a big attraction for artists, photographers and nature lovers from all over.

Only 3 hours from Johannesburg and Bloemfontein and 4 hours from Durban, Clarens is the perfect weekend-away destination for city dwellers wanting to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Here in Clarens you can spend relaxing hours exploring all the little town has to offer, many art galleries, gift shops, arts & craft shops, antiques, mosaic art etc. Clarens is a haven for many well known established and new artists and you’ll find various art galleries all over town, most of them around the square.

Clarens is also fast becoming known as the “Adventure Capital” of the Free State, offering a wide range of outdoor and sporting activities, ranging from mild to wild!

The white water rafting  just outside Clarens is the best in South Africa. Exciting grade 3 and 4 rapids, awesome scenery, crystal clear water. A definite ‘must-do’!

For more info check out one of my websites at: http://www.clarensinfo.co.za (I do my own websites, another skill I taught myself over the years)

Here are also a few photos of Clarens. Click on them to enlarge. Enjoy!
